Vase with Crocodiles and Serpents
circa 1860
Patinated metal and gilt bronze, chased and matted. The neck, decorated with palmettes and a row of beading, rests on a gadrooned collar adorned with bunches of grapes. The handles, formed as confronting crocodiles and serpents, open into acanthus leaves crowning faun masks. The shoulder is enriched with alternating medallions, scrolls and palmettes above heavy garlands of vine leaves, ears of wheat and fruit. It stands on a gadrooned pedestal foot.
